Queen Bee Rearing: To Bee or not to Bee…

Posted by Amanda Gillard on

Queen Bee rearing. Sounds cool right?! And it is, it is SO cool! And it’s what I am getting into. “What?!” I hear you say. “But you’re a beekeeper, surely it’s what you do?” Well, actually, it’s not! I have NEVER been inside a hive. With bees in it. Nath does all the beekeeping and I do the back of house stuff. I can’t say I have ever wanted to disturb the home of thousands of bees just to have a look and risk death by a million bee stings in the process…

But now, I have taken it upon myself to learn about Queen rearing. And it is FASINATING! I knew these wonderful little creatures were interesting but now I know so much more about them, it’s given me a renewed interest to know more and do more with them. So, I’ll be venturing out into the hives in a few weeks to get some hands on experience before starting to set up my cell builder colonies.

I’ll be using the Nicot system of queen rearing which is a non-grafting model. My eyesight isn’t the best and, to be honest, the thought of trying to graft teeny, tiny larvae fills me with dread! I have attached a picture of what I will be using.

I’m reading books and watching YouTube videos all in preparation for my new venture.

Watch this space, I’ll bring you on my queen rearing journey and share the highs, and undoubtedly, the lows of my first attempt at producing queens…

Until next time…
Amanda
